Lot 359

Description

Dennis Creffield,
British 1931–2018 -

Gunton Tower, 1992;

charcoal on paper, signed and dated lower right 'Dennis Creffield 92' and signed again, titled and dated on the reverse, 77.4 x 57 cm (unframed) (ARR)

Provenance:
with Albemarle Gallery, London;
private collection

Note:
Gunton Tower is part of Guton Hall, a large country house in Norfolk. This work was made following the artist's successful series of works depicting English cathedrals in the 1980s, commissioned by the Arts Council. The resulting works were exhibited at a Touring Exhibition which started at the Hayward Gallery in 1988, with a related book 'English Cathedrals: Drawings by Dennis Creffield' with a foreword by R.B. Kitaj. A series of works depicting French cathedrals were exhibited at the Albemarle Gallery in 1991. The catalogue of this show was written by Richard Cork.

Creffield exhibited and worked with the Borough Group collective, based in the Borough area of South London. This group included Lilian Holt, Miles Peter Richmond and Dorothy Mead, and they were hugely inspired in their practice by their teacher David Bomberg.
