Lot 321

Description

Derrick Greaves,
British 1927-2022 -

The Model Resting, 1974-5;

acrylic on canvas, signed, titled and dated on the reverse 'Derrick Greaves The Model Resting 1974/5', 116 x 142.8 cm (ARR)

Provenance:
Erhard Stern (known as Edward) and thence by descent

Note:
the present work was made at an important time for the artist, following his acclaimed exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery in 1973 and commercial exhibitions at Monica Kinley Gallery in London in 1973 and 1975. In an article by Mark Glazebrook (director of the Whitechapel 1969-72) written in 1967 he compared Greaves's work to Patrick Caulfield, Roy Lichenstein and Fernard Leger, emphasising the impact of Pop art on his work and in particularly the clarity of the work, avoiding any sense of expressive brushstroke. Other works from the era also focus on the female figure, such as 'Red Odalisque, 1972' and 'Nude (Grey Blanket), 1977'. Greaves's cool approach in these works offers an interesting subversion of the traditions of desire and eroticism in Western painting.
