Lot Footnotes
The poem in silver in naskh script, in cartouches, on one side of the blade:
"Kadem basdi bu cihane otuz dokuz bohlugun erleri,
Dilerim Bari Huda 'dan cennet olsun yerleri"
Translation:
"Janissaries from thirty nine battalions came along,
I ask you God, may their place be in heaven".
Alemdar means "standard-bearer". Ebubekir, the owner of the present yataghan, was a standard bearer in the Ottoman army. The poem states that Ebubekir was from the thirty ninth battalion. Comparable yataghans, probably made by the same master, bearing the tughra-shaped maker's signature "Mehmed", in the Military Museum, Istanbul. are published in Askeri Muze Yatagan Koleksiyonu, Askeri Muze ve Kultur Sitesi Komutanligi, Istanbul, 2009, pp.48-49.
