Lot 15

Description

A Contemporary silver bowl.

Ndidi Ekubia,

London, 2009.

Of shaped, square form, the hand raised bowl embossed and chased with an undulating, textured surface, 7.2cm high, 14cm dia., approx. weight 11ozt

Ndidi Ekubia (b.1973) is renowned for her talent for hand-raising and chasing silver. She uses traditional silversmithing tools and methods, raising with hammers and stakes from sheet metal to produce visually arresting, sculptural vessels. Her silverware combines a distinctive aesthetic with a strong sense of functionality. Born in Manchester to Nigerian parents, Ekubia's inspiration stems from a combination of the British urban landscape and her African cultural heritage, which endows her work with a formal drama and richly textured surface quality. Ekubia explains that her aim is 'to give the metal vitality and fluidity', which she achieves by exploiting the inherent mutability of the silver, intricately hammering the surface of her vessels to create texture. Her Sparkle Vase became part of the Victoria & Albert Museum’s permanent collection in 2013 and her work is represented in many public and private collections including The Ashmolean, The Pearson Silver Collection and The Goldsmiths' Company Collection.
