Lot 232

Description

Henry Stanier,
British c.1832-1892-

The Colossi of Memnon at Thebes in moonlight;

watercolour heightened with white on paper, signed, dated, and inscribed 'H. STANIER 1866 "SHADES OF THE EAST"' (lower edge), 35.8 x 55.1 cm.

Note:
Stanier studied at the Birmingham Society of Arts and School of Design, before going on to work as a painter at the japan company Jennens & Bettridge. Later in his life, Stanier served as Vice-Consul in Granada, Spain, an experience which informed the artist's watercolours depicting views of the Alhambra, amongst other Spanish scenes. He also produced a number of North African landscapes, of which the present, highly atmospheric scene, is an excellent example. Indeed, another version of the same scene at a different time of the day by Stanier, also dated to 1866, is in the collection of the British Museum [1994,U.9].
