Description
Thomas Bewick,
British c.1753-1828-
Waiting for death;
engraving on vellum, signed with initials 'TB' (within the plate, lower left), posthumously printed by Andrew Reid in 1876 and published by Robert Robinson, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, 23.5 x 30.8 cm.
Note:
The present scene was Bewick's most ambitious printing project, with the artist intending to develop and refine his print through the use of multiple, re-worked blocks. However, Bewick's death in 1828 left only the first block, from which the present impression was made.
This print exhibits Bewick's distinctive style, the influence of which can be seen in the work of later generations of printmakers such as Eric Ravilious (1903-1942), Paul Nash (1889-1946), and Gwen Raverat (1885-1957).
