Lot 430

Description

AMENDMENT: Please note the revised estimate of £4000-6000 for this lot.

Harold Knight, RA,
British 1874-1961-

Portrait of Mrs M-T Fraser seated half-length, wearing a white dress and an ermine coat;

oil on canvas, signed 'Harold Knight' (lower left), bears label for James Bourlet & Sons attached to the reverse of the frame, 76.5 x 64 cm. (ARR).

Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
Knight studied at the Académie Julian in Paris, where his teachers included Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant (1845-1902) and Jean-Paul Laurens (1838-1921). Knight's oeuvre is made up of sensitive portraits and contemplative interior scenes, many of which reveal a debt to the genre scenes of 17th-century Dutch artists such as Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675). Indeed, the ermine coat of the present sitter imparts the work with a sense of historicism which is evident in much of Knight's work, such as his portrait of Ethel Bartlett in the collection of Nottingham City Museums & Galleries [NCM 1954-71]. Another work by Knight, depicting Mrs Rosamond Edith Thompson [NCM 1992-653], recalls the handling and composition of the present portrait.
