Lot 424
Description
Eugène Deshayes,
French 1862/68-1939-
A woodland landscape;
oil on panel, signed 'Eug. Deshayes.' (lower left), 21.8 x 50.1 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
Deshayes was born in Algiers, studying at the School of Fine Arts in Algiers under the direction of the Barbizon painter Emile-Charles Labbé (1820-1885) before training under Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824-1904) in Paris. Although perhaps best-known for his Orientalist scenes, Deshayes was also a prolific landscape painter whose works exhibits the influence of the Barbizon approach. The present work is a typical example of the artist's output, executed in a wide format which repeatedly appears in Deshayes' output, and which, in the present scene, enables the artist to direct the viewer's attention to the dappled sunlight on the forest floor.
