Lot 287
Description
Georgina Lara,
British fl.1862-1871-
Rural village scene, with figures carrying baskets and horses watering outside an inn;
oil on canvas, signed 'E LARA' (on the log, lower left), 40 x 60.5 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
Georgina Lara was also known as Edwina Lara, variously signing her works 'E Lara' and 'G Lara'. Lara's output consists almost exclusively of bustling village scenes, occupied by rustic figures, and clearly heavily inspired by the work of 16th- and 17th-century Dutch artists, such as Pieter Bruegel the Elder (c.1525/30-1569) and Jan Steen (1626-1679). The present work is typical of Lara's oeuvre, with similar paintings including one which sold at Bonhams, London, on 22 March 2005 (lot 44) for £3,500, and another which sold at Woolley & Wallis on 19 March 2014 (lot 228) for £2,500.
