Description
Johann Nepomuk Andreas Gebhardt,
Czech/Austrian 1798-1871-
Portrait of a Bohemian gentleman, half-length, seated, wearing a gold chain and holding inscribed papers;
oil on canvas, signed and dated 'Johann And. Gebhardt gemalt / 1827' verso, 69.3 x 53.6 cm.
Provenance:
Property from a European Private Collection.
Note:
In the present work, the sitter holds a set of documents which appears to read 'Herrschaft Roβoritz / Durchlaucht...'. The words 'Herrschaft' and 'Durchlaucht', roughly translating to 'dominion' and 'Highness' respectively, suggest that the document refers to some form of property ownership, perhaps making the sitter a landholder, possibly connected to the area of Rosberitz in Bohemia, modern-day Czech Republic.
Gerbhardt produced a number of stately portraits of wealthy sitters, just like the present work, throughout the 19th century, making this a typical example of the artist's work.
