Description
A Chinese famille rose 'Magu' rectangular jardinière
Qing dynasty, 19th century
Deftly painted to the front and back with Magu and her an attendant on a log raft, the sides painted with two cranes and two deer, 24cm wide.
Provenance: Property from a private collection, London.
清十九世紀 粉彩麻姑獻壽花盆
來源:倫敦私人收藏。
Note: Magu is the female equivalent of Shoulao, the Daoist god of longevity. In Chinese literature she is described as a beautiful young woman with long birdlike fingernails , and is often portrayed sailing on a log raft, holding a vase of flowers, beside her attendant, as seen on the present lot. The presence of deer and cranes beneath pine trees to the sides of the present lot convey the wish for longevity.
