Lot 546

Description

A Chinese famille rose cylindrical snuff bottle

Qing dynasty, Jiaqing mark and period

Enamelled around the body with a confronting civil service and military official, the base with iron-red four-character seal mark, 5.8cm high.

The decoration on the present lot illustrates the Chinese phrase of praise 文武双全 Wen Wu Shuang Quan, which means 'being talented and proficient in both literary and martial matters'. The military official, depicted in iron-red, is likely the deity Zhong Kui,钟馗, who is often depicted as a fierce-looking man with a bushy beard, wearing a red robe, and wielding a sword. According to legend, he was originally a talented scholar during the Tang dynasty, who, despite passing the Imperial exams, was denied a place in the civil service because of his disfigured appearance.

In despair, he committed suicide, but the Emperor later recognized his loyalty and made him the king of ghosts in the afterlife. Zhong Kui vowed to rid the world of demons and protect the living from evil.

As a result, he became a popular deity, particularly during festivals like the Chinese New Year, when people hang his image on doors to ward off evil spirits.
