Lot 337

Description

A Louis XV ormolu-mounted tulipwood, amaranth and bois-de-bout marquetry table a ecrire, stamped by Roger van der Cruse known as Lacroix, third quarter 18th century, the inlaid top above tooled leather slide and drawer, on cabriole legs joined by lower shelf, with partially effaced R.V.L.C and JME stamps, re-mounted, 66cm high, 42cm wide, 31cm deep

Provenance: A Swiss Castle;
                     Anonymous sale; Galerie Koller, Zürich, 24 June 2004, lot 1096 (CHF258,520, as by 'BVRB').
                     Christie's, London, 6 July 2017, lot 55.
                     Christie's, Paris, Le Gout Francais dont 'Le Pavillon de Ribourg', 13 April 2017, lot 128.

Note: Whilst the overall form and design of the present mounts are consistent with tables by Bernard II von Risenburgh (BVRB), this table is in fact by the celebrated ébéniste Roger van der Cruse, called 'Lacroix', identified both by that stamp and by his alternative stamp 'R.V.L.C.', which has been partially effaced on this table. Lacroix was prolific in the production of small tables and at least three of this model by him are known: one was formerly in the Lindemann collection, sold Sotheby's, New York, 10 November 2006, lot 63; and two are illustrated in A. Pradère, Les ébénistes Français de Louis XIV à la Révolution, Paris, 1989, p. 288, figs. 311-312).
