Lot Footnotes
Note: Henry Pelham Alexander Pelham-Clinton, 6th Duke of Newcastle-under-Lyne (1834-1879), was an English noble styled Lord Clinton until 1851 and then Earl of Lincoln from 1851 to 1864, when he inherited the dukedom from his father. He briefly held MP status from 1857-59 in the name of maintaining family tradition, but this amounted to the full extent of his political career, and unlike his ancestors, he held no local offices. Pelham-Clinton's fondness for high living resulted in enormous gambling debts (amounting to £230,000, over £35 million in 2024), and he was forced to flee the UK in 1860. On 11 February 1861 Pelham-Clinton married Henrietta Adela Hope (1843-1913), the heiress of the wealthy British MP and patron of the arts Henry Thomas Hope (1808-1862), in Paris. The marriage settlement improved Pelham-Clinton's fortunes considerably, as his debts were settled, and an income of £50,000 a year was provided for the newly-wed couple.
