Description

An exhibition catalogue signed by HM King Charles III (b.1948), The Glory of Byzantium: Art and Culture of the Middle Byzantine Era A. D. 843-1261, ed. Helen C. Evans and William D. Wixom, issued in conjunction with the exhibition 'The Glory of Byzantium' held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, March 11th - July 6th, 1997, with dedication to Derek Hill to front page: For Dear old Derek / with affection and best wishes / from Charles / 1997., the book red cloth bound and with dust cover

Provenance: with David Batterham, bookseller.

Note: Arthur Derek Hill (1916-2000) was an English portrait and landscape painter. Derek painted HM Charles III when he was Prince of Wales on two occasions, first in 1967 and then again in 1971 for a portrait in the collection of Trinity College, Cambridge, and facilitated painting trips to Ireland for the King. The warmth of the King's feeling towards Derek is evident in his dedication to the artist found in this book. In Derek's words, as recorded in Naim Attallah's Singular Encounters (1990): "Prince Charles I’ve painted twice, and he sometimes asks advice about his own paintings. I’ve painted with him twice as well, I think. He does watercolours while I do oils. I can’t do watercolours and I don’t think he would be so good at oils, but he is very good at watercolours. He gets the feeling of the place, and it gives him enormous pleasure, which is the chief thing. Obviously I don’t like every building that he likes or dislike everything he dislikes, but the great thing about him is that he cares about what he says and thinks. He minds terribly, and if one day he’s King, then he won’t be able to say these things any more."
