Lot 84

Description

A Yoruba iron ceremonial Opa Osanyin staff, Nigeria, surmounted with central bird surrounded by smaller stylised birds, on a tapering shaft, on square wood stand, staff - 53cm high

Provenance: Acquired from Galerie Carrefour, Paris, June 1973.
                    With Gimpel Fils, London.

Note: The Yoruba believe that a large bird surrounded by smaller birds symbolizes the power of good over evil and the ability to control spirits and supernatural forces. Therefore, the opa osanyin physically represents this power, with one large bird typically surrounded by sixteen smaller birds. These smaller birds represent witches, which can transform into birds to support the healing process for Erinle, who was a great hunter who became an orisha (divine spirit).
