Michael Lloyd has described the inspiration for this bowl as stemming from an interest at the time in St Francis of Assisi, and in particular, his 'Canticle of Brother, Sun, Sister and Moon' and the story of St Francis preaching to the birds. The artist also recalls that a painting by Stanley Spencer (St Francis and the Birds, 1935) was a source of inspiration at the time.

Michael Lloyd was born in 1950 and went on to study at Birmingham and the Royal Colleges of Art. Since the late 1980s he has lived and worked in South West Scotland. He is often inspired by the natural world and has described his work as ‘an act of homage both to our landscape and to our increasingly fragile sense of creativity.’ His public and private commissions include work for York Minster and Lichfield Cathedral, the mace for the Scottish Parliament, and work for the Millennium Collection at Bute House. His pieces can be found in numerous public collections including the V&A, Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, and the Fitzwilliam Museum.
