Description
Gillian Ayres OBE,
British 1930-2018 -
Galahad, 1983;
oil on canvas, signed and dated lower right edge 'G Ayres 83' and signed and dated again on the reverse, dia. 30 cm (unframed) (ARR)
Provenance:
Knoedler Gallery, London, ref. no.02488 (according to the label attached to the reverse of the stretcher);
The Collection of Ralph I. Goldenberg
Note:
the present work is a brilliant Modernist play on the Renaissance form of the 'tondo'. Ayres made a series of these works in the 1980s, evoking a heightened sense of the spiritual to energetic abstract brushwork. Other examples of this series are now found in public collections, including 'Merlin, 1983' (The Young Gallery, Salisbury), 'Ah Mine Heart, 1981' (British Council) and 'Say the Bells of St. Clements, 1991' (London Transport Museum). The title of this work refers to Sir Galahad from Arthurian legend, a knight who is successful in his quest for the Holy Grail.
London-based Goldenberg amassed a wonderful and important collection, with a particular focus on American and European minimalism, owning pieces by Agnes Martin, Robert Ryman and Rachel Whiteread. Goldenberg was on the boards of a number of leading institutions, including the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago and The Art Institute of Chicago.
