Lot 5

Description

Simeon Solomon,
British 1840–1905 -

The Strawberry Flower, 1892;

red chalk on paper, signed with monogram and dated lower right '1892' and titled along lower centre, 56.3 x 36.3 cm

Provenance:
The Piccadilly Gallery, London (label attached to the reverse of the frame);
the Estate of Jill and Michael Barrington, purchased from the above

Exhibited:
The Piccadilly Gallery, London, 'A Century of British Drawings and Watercolours 1872-1972', 1985;
The Barbican Art Gallery, London, 'The Last Romantics', 9th February –9th April 1989, cat. no.21 (label attached to the reverse of the frame)

Note:
in the catalogue for the Barbican show, the author notes that this work is unusual in Soloman's career for focusing solely on a female portrait. As a queer artist, Solomon would often create scenes of same-sex desire and his figures are often sexually ambiguous, a feature which is 'not entirely absent' in the present work. Made at the latter stage of the artist's career, Solomon places the figure in a pastoral setting, adding to the ethereal quality of his subject and heightening their sense of otherness. In the 1870s, the artist was tragically arrested for his sexuality, leading to him being ostracized by society and stepping away from exhibiting, his work selling only to devoted friends and followers such as Oscar Wilde. The quiet strength and other-worldly quality of this portrait perhaps reflect the artist's continuing desire to live and create.
