Description
Henryk Gotlib,
Polish/British 1892-1966 -
Fishermen in Boat, c.1961;
oil on canvas, signed lower left 'Gotlib', 61 x 51 cm (ARR)
Provenance:
Crane Kalman Gallery, London (according to the label attached to the reverse of the frame);
Miss Ruth Thomas, purchased in April 1961 (according to the label attached to the reverse of the frame);
private collection
Note:
the artist had solo exhibitions at Crane Kalman Gallery, London in 1958, 1961 and 1963.
Gotlib studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, followed by the Kunstgewerbeschule in Vienna, and the Munich Academy of Fine Arts, where he was taught by the artist Angelo Jank.
He was a key member of the Formist movement in Poland, which rejected the seemingly restrictive standards of Realism, still very much dominant in early twentieth-century Polish art, in favour of an expressionism which was heavily influenced by figures such as Egon Schiele and Max Beckmann. The looser, more fluid application of paint which defined Gotlibs best works are strikingly evident in these pieces, which therefore serve as excellent examples of his style and approach.
Works by Gotlib are in a number of prominent collections, including those of the National Portrait Gallery, the Tate Gallery, and the Courtauld Gallery in London, the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, and the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff, among others.
