Lot 125

Description

Henry Lamb RA,
Australian/British 1883-1960 -

Portrait of a Man, c.1911-12;

oil on canvas, 51 x 40.5 cm (ARR)

Provenance:
Richard Carline (1896-1980);
Christie's, London, Modern British and Irish, Paintings Drawings and Sculpture,12th June 1981, lot 59;
Sotheby's, London, Modern British and Irish Paintings, Drawings, 8th March 1995, lot 24;
private collection

Note:
Richard Carline was an artist and the brother-in-law of Stanley Spencer. According to the inscription on the reverse of the work and Christie's cataloguing from his estate sale, he believed this painting was a portrait of the artist Boris Anrep (1883-1969) and there is a striking resemblance. Anrep was known for his mosaics, particularly for the National Gallery in London. A later portrait of Anrep by Henry Lamb is now in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, 'Boris Anrep and His Family, 1931'.
