Lot 443

Description

Percy Robert Craft,
British 1856-1934-

A Cornish Fishwife;

oil on canvas, signed 'Percy R Craft' (lower right), bears old label inscribed 'A Cornish Fishwife / Percy R Craft / N ?' attached to the upper stretcher bar, 59.9 x 34.4 cm.

Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
Craft attended Heatherley School of Fine Art and the Slade, where he studied under Edward Poynter (1836-1919) and Alphonse Legros (1837-1911), before moving to Newlyn in the 1880s. Here, he became a part of the bustling artistic community of the Newlyn School, which included figures such as Stanhope Forbes (1857-1947) and Walter Langley (1852-1922).
The present work is typical of Craft's Cornish subjects, with the composition recalling a larger painting by the artist which sold at Bonhams, Knightsbridge, on 13 November 2018 (lot 85).
