Lot 297

Description

Alice Brown Chittenden,
American 1859-1944-

Study of wildflowers with forget-me-nots;

oil on paper, signed and dated 'A.B. Chittenden. 93' (lower right), 42.4 x 30 cm.

Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
Chittenden was a prominent and versatile artist who worked in her home town of San Francisco. She was particularly celebrated for her botanical works, producing, over the course of 50 years, 256 paintings of 350 varieties of Californian wildflowers. Chittenden's works exhibit a striking accuracy, with their scientific significance surely enhanced by the assistance she received from her friend Alice Eastwood (1859-1953), a curator of botany at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco.
