Description
Harry Fidler, ROI RBA,
British 1856-1935-
Gathering Flowers;
oil on canvas, signed 'Fidler' (lower left), 25.2 x 30.4 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
Fidler studied at Hubert von Herkomer's (1849-1914) art school in Bushey, with other pupils including William Nicholson (1872-1949) and Lucy Kemp-Welch (1869-1958). The present work exemplifies Fidler's style, defined by a thick impasto applied in loose, impressionistic brushstrokes. The subject-matter, showing a contemplative figure tending flowers in what appears to be a country garden, is also typical of Fidler, who had a clear preference for depicting quiet scenes in rural settings.
