Description
Circle of William Merritt Chase,
American 1849-1916-
Portrait of a young man, quarter-length, in Spanish costume;
oil on canvas, inscribed 'WILLIAM / MERRITT/ CHASE / USA' verso, 60.4 x 50.6 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
Chase is known as one of the most prominent proponents of Impressionism in America, having studied in Munich under Karl von Piloty (1826-1886), where he befriended figures such as Frank Duveneck (1848-1919).
Chase's repeated visits to Spain throughout the 1880s and onwards proved highly inspiring for the artist, who subsequently produced numerous Spanish scenes, such as his 'Spanish Bric-a-brac Shop' of 1883. Chase taught a class of students in Madrid in the summer of 1896, returning for the last time in 1905, when he taught students in his 'Summer Class in Europe' school. Over the course of this visit, Chase painted six portraits of Spanish sitters, including one portrait of a female model and five of male models. It is possible that the present work was produced by a student at Chase's Madrid summer school in 1905, as it is clearly informed by Chase's own portraits of Spanish models, such as his 'Bust-Length Study of a Spanish Man' [Pisano, 2007, OP.112], and his 'Portrait of a Spanish Girl', which sold at Sotheby's New York, 6 March 2019, lot 65 ($42,000).
