Description
Georges Henri Manzana Pissarro,
French 1871-1961-
A couple embracing under palm trees, with view to a river beyond;
charcoal on paper, signed 'manzana' (lower right), 30.4 x 23.5 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
Manzana Pissarro, as the son of Camille Pissarro (1830-1903), was highly influenced by the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist milieu in which his father worked, and was surrounded in his youth by figures such as Paul Cézanne (1839-1906), Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919), and Claude Monet (1840-1926).
The present work exhibits Manzana Pissarro's distinctive style, evident in the sinuous forms of the embracing couple, and the flowing lines of the palm fronds beyond, which also gestures towards the artist's inclination towards Orientalist subject matter.
