Description
Maeve Gilmore,
British 1917-1983 -
Flint Wall, c.1950;
oil on canvas, 30.4 x 40.7 cm (unframed) (ARR)
Provenance:
The Estate of the Artist;
Pierre Spake, King's Lynn, purchased from the above;
private collection, purchased from the above
Note:
much like the work of her contemporary, Prunella Clough, Gilmore has drawn out the abstract qualities of the old flint wall offset against her almost geometric approach to the rolling hills, to create a highly individual approach to the tradition of British landscape painting. The wife of celebrated novelist and artist Mervyn Peake and mother-in-law to Phyllida Barlow, Gilmore's work is finally receiving the academic and popular acclaim it deserves, following a major retrospective at Studio Voltaire in 2022.
