Lot 22

Description

An Alexander II Russian silver basket.

Sazikov,

Moscow, 1869.

Assay master Victor Savinkov, 84 standard, signed Sazikov beneath the imperial warrant, the plain, oval basket designed with a swing handle and raised on a shallow oval foot, engraved with monogram (Latin AS) to handle, approx. 21.9 x 28.8 x 6cm, approx. weight 26.5ozt

The firm of Sazikov (founded in Moscow in 1793 by Pavel Fyodorovich Sazikov) was one of the finest and most well-regarded in Imperial Russia. In 1846 it became one of the main suppliers to the Imperial Court of Nicholas I. In the latter half of the nineteenth century, Sazikov regularly exhibited at international exhibitions and won numerous awards including a gold medal and the Order of the Legion of Honour at international exhibitions in London (1851) and Paris (1867). This silver basket was assayed the year after the death of Ignaty Sazikov (son of Pavel Fyodorovich), at which time the Moscow firm was under the direction of Ignaty's sons, Pavel and Sergei. The Sazikov firm was later bought by the firm of Khlebnikov.
