Lot 502

Description

After Antonio del Pollaiuolo, Florentine, 1429-1498, a plaster portrait bust of a young man wearing an elaborate breastplate, first half 20th century, cast after the painted terracotta original, 49cm high

Note: Antonio Pollaiuolo, along with his brother Piero, was active as a painter, engraver and sculptor in Florence during the 15th century. The identity of the young man in the original terracotta bust is unknown. That bust (currently in the Bargello Museum, Florence) has been painted to resemble bronze, and may have been the model for a bronze which has since been lost. Its unusual bulbous base perhaps indicates it was originally intended for a specific setting, possibly a tomb. A similar plaster cast after the terracotta original is on display in the V&A Cast Courts, made by the London-based Italian firm, Franchi and Son (accession number REPRO.1867-181).
