Catholicism is a recurrent motif in Souza’s oeuvre. The Roman Catholic Church with all its elaborate services and imposing architecture had a deep and lasting impact on a young Souza. Grand architecture, priests in richly embroidered vestments, enormous crucifixes, wooden carvings of saints decorated in gold with other bright colours, all made a lasting impression on Souza.

Community, betrayal, sacrifice, friendship and love. All these themes come alive in ‘The Last Supper’ revealing Jesus and his apostles seated around a table, sharing a final meal before Christ foretells his betrayal - arrested and crucified - evoking shock, rage, guilt and a sea of other emotions in the scene.

The Last Supper is rendered here in Souza’s favourite and powerful technique ~ Chemical Alteration on Magazine paper. The work is dark. Existing images of the table, the candle with its eerie glow are preserved. The treatment of the apostles’ faces again signifies the importance of this in Souza’s life. There is no better artist than Souza to portray the gamut of human emotions on the apostles’ faces achieved in this version of The Last Supper.
