Description
Thomas Barker of Bath,
British 1769-1847-
Hilly landscape with travelling figures on donkeys under cloudy skies; and travelling figures in a sunset landscape with a tower and the sea beyond;
oil on canvas, each bears label inscribed 'Thos Barker of Bath 1769-1847' attached to the reverse of the frame, 43.2 x 63.7 cm., two (2).
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
The present works are classic examples of the bucolic, romanticised landscapes for which Barker was known and celebrated. Barker's approach was heavily influenced by the landscapes of Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788), particularly in his use of loose, free brushstrokes to evoke a sense of movement, evident in the swirling clouds in the skies of one of the present works. The present compositions are typical of Barker, with small, rustic figures set against an idealised pastoral landscape which expands beyond. This pair also exhibits Barker's range, in his ability to evoke the heaviness of a dark, blustery day, with equal skill as the bright calm of a quiet sunset, with still, glassy seas stretching into the distance. A similar work by Barker, with diminutive figures in a vast wooded landscape, under stormy skies, sold at Christie's, New York, 3 October 2001 (lot 74) for $16,000.
