Description
Carl Henrik Nordenberg,
Swedish 1857-1928-
Interior scene with a boy peeling potatoes by a hearth;
oil on panel, signed 'CHenrick Nordenberg' (lower right), 41 x 31.4 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
Nordenberg was known for his minutely observed and evocative interior scenes, clearly influenced by the tradition of 17th-century Dutch painters such as Pieter de Hooch (1629-1684) and Caspar Netscher (1639-1684). Indeed, the present work exhibits a strong debt to Netscher's 'The Lace Maker', now in the Wallace Collection [P237], particularly through Nordenberg's highly detailed depiction of the somewhat shabby interior, with paint peeling from the walls behind the sitter's head, and the basic metal implements of the sparse kitchen gleaming against the dark background. Nordenberg treated this subject regularly throughout his career, as in his kitchen interior which sold at Bukowski's, Stockholm, on 17 May 1993 (lot 83).
