Description
Cyrus Cuneo, ROI,
American/British 1879-1916-
Study of a sleeping figure in theatrical costume, a lute by his feet;
pencil on paper, 23.4 x 35.4 cm.
Provenance:
The family of the artist;
from whom purchased by the present owner.
Note:
Before training as an artist, San Francisco-born Cuneo had an early career as a champion boxer, which allowed him to raise funds to study art in Paris. Once there, he worked with Ernest Gustave Girardot (1840-1904) and in the studio of James Abbott McNeill Whistler (1834-1903), becoming the latter's chief student. Cuneo enjoyed particular success as an illustrator, producing drawings for the Illustrated London News, depicting major events such as the funeral of King Edward VII (1841-1910) and King George V (1865-1936).
The present two drawings, views of the same figure, seated in the same position, from different angles, seem to originate from one page of a sketchbook, linked by the sketches on the reverse of both sheets, which appear to be separate sections of a single drawing.
