Description
Manner of Bartolomé Esteban Murillo,
19th century-
The Immaculate Conception;
oil on canvas, 105.5 x 63.5 cm.
Provenance:
Property from a European Private Collection.
Note:
The present work recalls the representation of the 'Immaculate Conception' as treated by Murillo (1617-1682), who is known to have painted at least twenty versions of this subject. Murillo's depiction is typically defined by the iconography of the Virgin surrounded by cherubs, wearing a white robe and blue mantle, her gaze directed upwards. The present work also incorporates the imagery of a serpent crushed beneath the Virgin's feet, which is another popular motif in 17th-century depictions of this subject.
