Lot 28

Description

Manner of Alonso Cano,
possibly South American School, 18th/19th century-

The Immaculate Conception;

oil on canvas, 57.2 x 39.2 cm.

Provenance:
Property from a European Private Collection.

Note:
The present representation of the 'Immaculate Conception' is heavily influenced by Spanish artists of the later 16th century, and in particular the iconographic traditions established by the Spanish painter Francisco Pacheco (1564-1644), under whom Alonso Cano (1601-1667) studied. This composition is heavy with iconography which indicates the Virgin Mary's purity, including the lilies which she clasps in her hand, and the snake with an apple in its mouth, a typical reference to original sin, which is trampled underfoot. These are common elements of paintings of the 'Immaculate Conception', alongside the stars and cherubs above the Virgin's head and the crescent moon upon which she stands, a symbol which derives from the depiction of the classical goddess Diana.
