Lot 289

Description

Franciska Clausen,
Danish 1899-1986 -

Abstract composition, 1930;

gouache on paper, signed and dated lower right 'F.Clausen 1930', 29 x 21.4 cm (unframed) (ARR)

Provenance:
the Collection of Kristian Romare (1926-2015)

Note:
Romare was a Swedish tv critic and art historian, who was married to artist Everlyn Nicodemus. The pair wrote together 'Africa, art criticism and the big commentary' in 2011.

Clausen was a pioneer of geometric abstraction in Denmark and this work reflects her highly refined approach. Clausen was taught privately by important figures in Modernism such as  László Moholy-Nagy, Alexander Archipenko and Fernand Léger in the 1920s, the latter being highly influential on her mature style of mechanised abstraction. This work in the 1930s demonstrates a more Neo-Plastic approach, with its limited use of flat colour and linear approach to form. It was made around the time of her involvement with the ‘Cercle et Carré’ group of abstract artists, which included Piet Mondrian, Sophie Taeuber-Arp and Le Corbusier. Clausen exhibited with the group in their only exhibition in 1930.
