Lot 121

Description

A fragmentary light grey schist standing figure of a bodhisattva, possibly Maitreya, ancient region of Gandhara, Kushan Period, 2nd-3rd century AD, facing forward in restrained tribhanga (a gentle S-curve), wearing elegant, flowing robes and standing on a socle or pedestal decorated with lotus leaves,  his hands would probably have originally been in abhayamudra (the gesture of fearlessness), a series of necklaces fall from his collar, with one diagonally following the contours of his muscular torso round to his right side from his left shoulder, featuring a series of amulets along the cord.  On top of this is a thicker necklace which hangs in front of the beads, two further corded necklaces sit high up, around his right arm a decorated circular armlet, his robes or uttariya hang gracefully from his left shoulder, with densely ridged rhythmical sections falling downwards and behind his waist, as well as across his torso, he wears a dhoti-like garment, a common feature of bodhisattvas from the north-west region (see Susan L. Huntington, The Art Of Ancient India, New York 1985, p.138.), on stand, 52cm. high (without stand), 20cm. diam. 10.9cm. deep.

Provenance: Acquired Jonathan Tucker, 2006.
