Description

Seventeen Celtic and Romano-British bronze and silver brooches discs and plates,

Including a La Tène III spring brooch,3.5cm;  a plate brooch with decorative recesses on the bow, with zoomorphic terminal, 4.5cm; a small silver Aucissa type brooch, 3.2cm; a Dolphin brooch with ridged bow, 4.3cm; a P-shaped or Aucissa variant brooch with deeply arched bow, the maker’s name ‘ACUTI’ stamped above the hinge, 5.3cm long;  a sawfish type brooch with red enamel remaining in the lozenge shaped cells on the bow, surmounted by a recumbent lion, probably not originally belonging, 4.2cm long, pin partially remains; a trumpet brooch, 6.2cm long, pin missing; a dolphin brooch, 3.2cm long, pin missing; a fantail brooch, 3.2cm long, pin missing, ink inscribed with the number ‘3318’; a small disc brooch, with dots around a central circle, some enamel remaining, 2.4cm maximum diam; a double lunular plate brooch, with dots in the crescents either side of a central knop, traces of enamel remaining, 3.6cm long, pin missing; a brooch with two opposing discs with radiate nodules and two opposing crescents around a central openwork rectangle, 4.9cm long, pin missing; an enamelled disc brooch with sunburst design, some red enamel remaining 2.4cm diam, pin missing; a plate brooch with two dolphins flanking an enamelled disc, 2.8cm maximum width, pin missing; a horse and rider brooch, with traces of enamel, 3.2cm wide, pin missing; a hare brooch with traces of enamel remaining, 2.5cm, pin missing, and an openwork ring flanked by ‘wings’, 3.4cm wide (17)

Provenance: Mainly found in East Anglia; All private English collection, acquired on the UK market in the 1990s.

Buyer's Premium

The buyer shall pay the hammer price together with a premium thereon of 26% up to £20,000 (31.2% inclusive of VAT), 25% from £20,001 - £500,000 (30% inclusive of VAT), 20% from £500,001 thereafter (24% inclusive of VAT). The premium price is subject to VAT at the standard rate.

(ARR) - ARTIST'S RESALE RIGHT

Qualifying living artists and the descendants of artists deceased within the last 70 years are entitled to receive a re-sale royalty each time their work is bought through an auction house or art market professional.

It applies to lots with hammer value over £1,000 as follows:
0 to £50,000 - 4%
£50,000.01 to £200,000 - 3%
£200,000.01 to £350,000 - 1%
£350,000.01 to £500,000 - 0.5%
Exceeding £500,000 - 0.25%
ARR is capped at £12,500

Export of goods

Buyers intending to export goods should ascertain whether an export licence is required before bidding. Export licences are issued by Arts Council England and application forms can be obtained from its Export Licensing Unit.
