Lot Footnotes
This remarkable dish relates to a fragment in the Victoria and Albert Museum (LNS 791C) depicting a seated figure playing a four- stringed instrument, the oud, in its subjects matter and in the attention to detail in the patterns on the figures' garments. The design of a musician is one that is part of the cycle of the "pleasure of the court" of the early Islamic period. The pose of the dancers with their one foot raised recalls the famous Abbasid section of a wall painting with two dancers found during Herzfeld’s excavations at Samarra (1911-1913) in the Main Caliphal Palace (Dar al-Khilafa), Reception-Hall Block, so-called "harem" (Ernst Herzfeld, Die Malereien von Samarra (Berlin, 1927), plate II) now located in the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Art, Istanbul.
The garments the figures wear vary from that of the fragment in their construction, depicting a collarless coat which wraps right over left. The development of fashion in the Abbasid period was largely shaped by the emergence of a Persian secretarial class as trendsetters of taste and style. The prominence of this Persian influence increased during the Abbasid period. The government bureaucracy was filled with Persian officials who would inspire high society with trends. An example of this Persian influence is provided by the popularity of the caftan, a sleeved robe with sleeves which buttoned down the front.
