An inlaid wood pencase (qalamdan)

Iran, 19th century

Of typical form, with sliding tray, the lid and sides decorated with inlaid swastikas

21.7cm. long (VAT charged on hammer price)

The swastika motif in Iran was widely used on architecture, for example in tilework in the 14th century Friday mosque at Yazd, and appears on metalwork of the Timurid period. The Topkapi Palace Museum, Istanbul contains in its treasury the Topkapi architectural design scroll. Datable to the 16th century, the scroll contains 114 drawings of geometric designs, muqarnas designs and patterns of square Kufic which are very important for the understanding of Timurid and Turkmen architectural design principles. Contained within this scroll is the repeated use of the swastika as a design motif.
