Lot 342

Description

To Be Sold with No Reserve

A fine intact small Kashan lustreware pottery bowl with inscriptions,

Iran, 12th century,

The cavetto decorated with a band of drop shaped medallions below two registers of loose naskh calligraphy, the near flat well with an hexagonal lay out of similar medallions, a continuous calligraphic inscription in naskh script around, the exterior with a simplified lattice, 15.2cm. diam.

Provenance: Private UK Collection acquired prior to 1979

Inscriptions: Around the rim

'O heart! I advised you a thousand times
To free me from your coquetry
Once again you have disgraced me in the world
Helpless I am, I have fallen in your -..-'

'May glory, prosperity, greatness, and joy
Never be far from the owner of this bowl.'

'Glory [and] Prosperity and Happiness and Well-being and Generosity and Grace
(of God) and Happiness and'

Around the wall, in lustre:

'May your wealth and glory be always increasing
May your prosperity surpass all limits,
So that whatever reaches your palate from this bowl,
O Master of the World, may add to your life.'

'May the Creator of the World, protect
The owner of this (bowl), wherever he may be'

'Perpetual Glory and Well-being'
Round the base, repeated twice :

'May glory, prosperity, greatness, and joy
Never be far from the owner of this bowl.'

'Glory -..- and Happiness and Well-being'

This bowl is intact. The lustre remains strong overall. As can be seen on the catalogue and website illustrations it has slightly dulled in places, notably to the upper inscription, and below it to the band of medallions. An area to the exterior has entirely faded due to light iridescence. Under U. V this bowl renders a uniform dark aubergine tint, its iridescence a uniform white tint.
