Lot 296

Description

To Be Sold With No Reserve

A white-glazed moulded pottery flask

Gurgan, Iran, 12th-13th century

On six feet, with plain base, each gadroon with trefoils and palmettes above, the shoulder worked as a lotus flower, the neck tapering to a flaring mouth, with straight handle and short waisted spout, possible formed of two sections

20cm. high

Provenance: Acquired from Kamyas Antiques, New York, 12 December 1997

Under U. V light the body renders two distinct colours : light aubergine for the lower half and a pale grey with tints of light pink for the upper half. The spout and the flaring mouth are repaired and restored form multiple breaks. A drip from the spout along the body is visible under U. V. light. The handle is mostly restored. The body and shoulders show areas of repaint. One of the feet appears to also have been repaired and, or, restored. It is likely this lot is composite.
