Lot 424

Provenance:
The Pace Gallery, New York, purchased 1966;
The Tremaine Collection, Connecticut and New York;
Christies New York, 'Contemporary art from The Tremaine Collection', 9th November 1988, lot 17, illus. p.4;
Saatchi & Saatchi, London

Exhibited:
The Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford, Connecticut, 26th February - 29th April 1984, 'The Tremaine Collection: 20th Century Masters', p.123

Literature:
K. Levin, 'Lucas Samaras', New York, Harry N. Abrahams, Inc., 1975, no.193 (illus.)

Note:
In this sublime, early box made by the artist in the 1960s, the luxurious - almost fetishistic - bejewelled exterior contrasts with its hidden interior, guarded by multiple doors, reflecting the contrast between the exterior and interior self that has preoccupied the artist throughout his career. The machine at its centre, is perhaps a brain, whirring on rotation, like the thought patterns of an individual mind. The box calls for you to play with it, to open its doors and peer in, constantly in flux and never fixed.
