Lot 13

Clare Atwood,
British 1866-1962 -

Industrial interior, 1911;

oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left 'Clare Atwood 1911', 51 x 61 cm (ARR)

The Property of the Late Reverend John Watson (1939-2019)

Atwood was part of a interesting circle of lesbian artists and writers that included Radclyffe Hall and her partners Christabel Marshall and Edith Craig. The artist had her first solo exhibition at the Carfax Gallery in 1912 and was commissioned to paint war scenes for the Canadian Government through the Canadian War Memorials Fund. Atwood created scenes of railway stations and later the activities of the Women's Voluntary Service. A number of these war related works are now in the Imperial War Museum Collection. The artist also created works depicting the interiors of theatres and markets, similar in style to the present work.
