Lot 223

Description

Avigdor Arikha,
Romanian/French 1929-2010 -

Untitled, 1960;

oil on canvas, signed and dated lower right 'Arikha 60', further signed in Hebrew, also dated on the reverse 'Juin-Juillet 1960', 130 x 96.5 cm (ARR)

Provenance:
with Galerie Karl Flinker, Paris (according to the partial label attached to the reverse)

Note:
the artist had a solo exhibition at Galerie Karl Flinker from 11th October to 4th November 1961. It is possible this work is listed as either no.3 or 8 in this exhibition's catalogue.

This painting was made at the height of the artist's achievements as an abstract painter, following a major museum show at the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam. The work demonstrates his highly personal approach to the abstraction, marking him as a major figure in the so-called Tachiste movement that was ongoing in Europe in the Post-War period and included artists such as Serge Poliakoff and Sam Francis. In 1965, the artist would turn away from abstraction, at the encouragement of his friend Alberto Giacometti, which he would follow for the rest of his career, marking this work as particularly special in his oeuvre.

Arikha's work is in public collections worldwide including the British Museum, London, The Jewish Museum, New York, Centre Pompidou, Paris.
