Description

Abel Bertram,
French 1871-1954 -

Normandie Shepherds;

oil on canvas, signed lower right 'Abel Bertram', 65 x 76 cm (unframed) (ARR)

Note:
the artist exhibited at the Salon des Tuileries and Salon d'Automne, having trained under Antoine Guillemet. This early work shows the artist exploring the landscape of his home region of Normandy, the deep red of the sky adding a symbolic quality to his work. His later work would become looser in style, following the influence of the Fauves. Works by the artist are in the Musee d'Art Moderne in Paris.
