American/British 1880-1959 -

Reclining Nude, 1928;

pencil on paper, signed lower left 'Epstein', 42 x 55 cm (ARR)

Christies, London, 28th March 1996, lot 37;
private collection

Exhibited:
Godfrey Philips. London, 'Drawings by Epstein', October-November 1928, no.44 (according to the label attached to the reverse of the frame)

Literature:
Hubert Wellington, 'Jacob Epstein, Seventy-five Drawings', J. Saville & Co. Ltd, 1929, no.44, illus.

Note:
one of the most important sculptors in Britain of the 20th century, Sir Jacob Epstein's works adorn public sites across Europe, including Coventry Cathedral, Hyde Park, London and the Père Lachaise Cemetery, Paris. The artist created highly sensitive pieces, characterised by highly textured surfaces and expressive, heavy features. This sculptural approach can be seen in the present work in the sheer presence of the figure.

This work was originally exhibited under the title 'Nude Negress'. It is one of a series of drawings Epstein made of the same unidentified model in the summer of 1928, many of which were exhibited at the Godfrey Phillips Gallery in London later that year. Another work from the series is now in the Tate collection.
