Lot 70

Description

Jean Dufy,
French 1888-1964 -

Les Battages;

oil on canvas, signed lower right 'Jean Dufy', 49.8 x 64.9 cm (ARR)

Provenance:
Christie's, London, Impressionist and Modern Paintings, Drawings and Sculpture, 7th December 1973, lot 317b (illus.);
Peter and Iris Hughes, purchased from the above and thence by descent

Note:
This work is accompanied by a signed photo-certificate no.4901 from M. Jacques Bailly dated 11th September 2023. The painting will be included in his forthcoming catalogue raisonné on Jean Dufy.

The original owner of the work Iris Hughes had an important British collection of Post-Impressionist art, including Pierre Bonnard, Walter Sickert and Maurice Utrillo, and was the daughter of Sir and Lady Maximillian Michaelis, who donated a large part of their collection to the South African National Gallery.

This beautiful work by Jean Dufy is the third work sold by Roseberys from this collection, following the successful sale of a Georges Rouault and Claude Venard in September 2023. The present work is a brilliant example of the artist’s joyful style that he developed in parallel with his brother, Raoul Dufy.

Jean Dufy had the first exhibition of his work at the celebrated Galerie Berthe Weill, Paris, in 1914. This gallery had presented the first exhibitions of many of the most important Fauve artists, including Henri Matisse, Albert Marquet and Emilie Charmy.
