Description
Zoran Mušič,
Slovenian/Italian 1909-2005 -
Nous ne sommes pas les derniers, 1971;
oil pastel on paper, signed and dated lower right 'Music 71', titled lower left 'Nous ne sommes pas les derniers' and inscribed on the reverse 'ZM 14', 76 x 56.4 cm (unframed) (ARR)
Note:
in this highly moving and very personal late work, the artist explores his traumatic experiences at Dachau during the Second World War. Mušič originally made drawings relating to this in 1945, but it was not until the 1970s that he returned to the theme, making a series of works on paper and paintings, collectively known under the title 'Nous ne sommes pas les derniers'. With an expressive yet economic handling of paint, the works speak directly, and with courage, of these horrific events.
Other works from the series are now in the collections of the Museo Reina Sofia and the Tate. These works were also featured in the 2018 exhibition 'Zoran Music: Poetry of Music' at the Leopold Museum in Vienna.
