Lot 73

Description

Thomas Hudson,
English 1701-1779-

Portrait of a gentleman, traditionally identified as Joseph King, wearing a blue jacket and white waistcoat;

oil on canvas, in a feigned oval, bears inscription 'Mr Joseph King' on the upper stretcher bar, 76.5 x 63.1 cm.

Provenance:
Cider House Galleries, Bletchingley.
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
Hudson trained under Jonathan Richardson (1667-1745), and went to become one of the most prolific and successful portraitists in 18th-century Britain, whose pupils included Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792) and Joseph Wright of Derby (1734-1797). Hudson's portraits are notable for their fine painting and sensitive handling, allowing the artist to convey a strong sense of the sitter's character and presence. This technique also enables Hudson to depict the range of textures and fabrics of their clothing, with the present sitter wearing a rich, deep blue jacket which contrasts with the crisp white of his shirt, rendering the portrait particularly striking and further imparting a realistic sense of the sitter's presence.
